Story of My Drop

Kaitlyn Hickmann, 4th grade, High Lakes Elementary

I once fell from a cloud and landed on the rough rooftop of High Lakes Elementary School with a sploosh. I began to prepare for the long, perilous journey that I would have to endure and reach my destination, the Pacific Ocean. I am a raindrop, one of millions that would enter a whole new world.

I fell into a puddle on the ground where many drops met with mine. I flowed down a hill into a storm drain. Thousands of drops came with me as we rushed through the slick metal pipes in Bend, Oregon. We made a sharp turn and entered a narrow stream. We moved quickly into a river, the Deschutes. I was caught on the leaf of a plant until a strong current pulled me off and I continued my journey far north. We then passed through Redmond.

Now the water began to flow faster. Fish between, birds above us. We soon reached the Pelton Dam, what a sight. I would’ve stayed, but I, one droplet among millions, could not change the current as it swept me away.

We passed Maupin and dropped down at the sensational Sherars Falls. We continued flowing at an even, steady pace. We now made many sharp turns. Some drops would fly through the air and land on the grass with a pit-pat.

Soon, we met up with the strong Columbia River and got swept away into the Pacific Ocean.

I have many different purposes. I’m only one drop of water, but I still make a world of a difference.
